Winners of the EFFS Award for the best PhD Dissertation in Freshwater Sciences (2023-2024)
It is a great pleasure to announce the results of the European Federation for Freshwater Sciences 2023-2024 PhD Award.
The jury has decided to award the best EFFS 2023-2024 PhD thesis Award to:
Dr. Mathis L. Messager, for his PhD thesis titled Putting intermittent rivers on the map: integrating non-perennial rivers and streams in the sustainable management of freshwater ecosystems. This thesis was selected by the Association Française de Limnologie (AFL) and presented at the Université de Lyon (France) – École Doctorale E2M2 Évolution, Écosystèmes, Microbiologie, Modélisation, being supervised by Prof. Dr. Thibault Datry (UR RiverLy, équipe EcoFlowS) and Prof. Bernhard Lehner (Département de Géographie, Université McGill, Canada). The winner will give a plenary lecture on his thesis at SEFS-14 to be held in Bolu (Türkiye), from 20th to 25fth July, 2025.
Among all the other candidates, that were previously awarded as their best country’s theses for the years 2023-2024 by EFFS-Federated societies, the jury highlighted the high scientific quality of all works. Consequently, it was decided to award a second and a third prize, that will be presented as posters at the EFYR stand in SEFS-14.
The second position award has been granted to:
Dr. Duncan A. O'Brien, for his PhD thesis titled Complexity and regime shifts: testing the predictability of ecosystem transitions. This thesis was selected by the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA), and was conducted at the University of Bristol (UK). The thesis was co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Chris F. Clements and Prof. Dr. Martin J. Genner.
The third position has been awarded to:
Dr. Giulia Cesarini, for her PhD thesis titled Concepts and tools for evaluating plastic impacts: introductory multi-level applications for riverine ecosystem preservation. The thesis was selected by the Associazione Italiana di Oceanologia e Limnologia (AIOL), and was developed at the Università di Roma Tre (Italy). This thesis was co-supervised by Prof. Dr. Massimiliano Scalici and by Dr. Camilla Puccinelli.
The jury was composed by the following European freshwater scientists:
- Dr. Mary Kelly-Quinn (University College Dublin, Ireland) - Dr. Rachel Stubbington (Nottingham Trent University, UK) - Dr. Juan Manuel Olalla (Universidad de Granada, Spain) - Dr. Luigi Naselli-Flores (Università di Palermo, Italy)
We wish to thank all of them for their invaluable collaboration.
Please, share this message within your societies, and encourage the members to attend our 14th Symposium for European Freshwater Sciences (SEFS14) to be held in Bolu (Türkiye), from 20th to 25fth July, 2025 (www.sefs14.com).
Congratulations to the awardees, as well as to all candidates for their excellent work, that, further to the European awardees, were already distinguished as the best nationwide theses by their own EFFS-federated societies.
